The nearest ocean is almost a thousand miles from Madison, but the shores of Lake Michigan provide a closer and salt-free beach getaway.
I spend the last weekend in Michigan City, Indiana, with my in-laws. Though the summer polar vortex kept me out of the water, I enjoyed the sound of crashing waves, soft sand and beautiful sunsets. And eating good food! Many of my in-laws are great cooks, and those who dared cooked dinner for the entire gang—thirty or so family members, significant others and little beasties.
Lunches were often eaten out. Yes, a restaurant takeover is a specialty of my husband’s large family, making all but the seasoned servers very nervous. One afternoon we headed to nearby New Buffalo, Michigan, to try the Stray Dog Bar & Grill. The large back room accommodated our group easily.
The menu offerings are as ample as the dining room, ranging from kale salad to burgers and sandwiches to pizza, and, of course, dogs. Hot dogs, that is. Start your meal with one of their strong cocktails or a beer. Yes, there are other options, but you are on vacation, right? I chose the refreshing cucumber martini (pictured at right) and the grilled mahi tacos. Three tacos come with a nice-sized piece of fish, some slaw and avocado. My only complaint was that you had to order salsa on the side for an extra $1, and in my opinion, it needed the flavor and spice.
Just a 3.5–4 hour drive from Madison, the area around Michigan City offers a delicious and beautiful getaway for your own motley crew of family and strays.
